Years ago, in the wintry years a steel clad man had rode away
He came to the grove of the gods and asked they’d hear what he would say
They granted their pity and lent him their ears, and wiped away the man’s cold tears
As he opened his mouth and sat in the snow, they knew very well what they would hear

“I gave you my faith, I gave you my life, but you give me nothing but bloodshed and strife.
I try my hardest every day, but all you do is turn your gaze.
Is there nothing that I can do to earn your favor and be renewed?
I’m tired of bloodshed, I’m sick of strife; I ask of you now to end my life.”

The gods refused to oblige his request so he turned around and ran away
He journeyed on with nowhere to go, until he came straight to the bay
One final cry into the sky he cursed the gods who left him be
He looked down into the abyss and cast himself into the sea
Now he is dead and his body was lost, his story untold for centuries
The only place that he belongs is lost within his memories
No one had mourned, and no one had cried, none who knew this man who died
Black oceans have swallowed him, no one will find where he now lies

He gave his faith, he gave his life, but they gave him nothing but bloodshed and strife

He could not take the daily strife; so he had no choice but to end his life.

This might be my favourite of Heilung. They've improved a bit on their later releases but their debut is still much meaner, and darker. Maria's amazing voice obviously steals the show but I also quite like Kai's too, especially on the live performance. In fact I'd say get LIFA over this IMO. The spoken word bits are really cool to hear proto-germanic in use but for relistening purposes they are going to be a bit obtrusive. Nevertheless the proper music here is on continual repeat for me. Amazing, mighty and epic! Yet I know this is Tolkien inspired dungeon synth, it is also great as well for reading Malazan and Cosmere novels as well. Love it. Iván Delgado
